Italy's oldest carnival

The Carnival of Fano is documented as far back as 1347: it is among the oldest in Italy and remains one of the best loved in Le Marche. For 2027 the organisers have announced three great parade Sundays: 31 January, 7 and 14 February.

Two things set it apart from every other carnival. The getto: an extraordinary quantity of sweets rains down on the crowd from the floats, and people come equipped with upturned umbrellas and baskets to catch them. And the Musica Arabita, described by the organisers as the carnival's essential, identity-defining symbol: a band that plays on pots, tins and improvised instruments.

The hard part of any carnival is getting there: on parade Sundays Fano fills up and parking becomes a battle. Staying in Senigallia removes the problem entirely: it's 21 km, the train takes 9-13 minutes with around twenty connections a day and a ticket costing a few euros. Loft Pisacane27 is in the old town, 5-10 minutes' walk from the station: you go and come back on foot and by train, with no car at all.
